Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2010-11: Horsham 1 – Eastbourne 1

The final result of the match between Horsham 1 and Eastbourne 1 in the Mid-Sussex League has not yet been decided. The score stands at 2.5 to 0.5 in Horsham’s favour, with two games unfinished.

Peter Harbott, playing Black in one of his dodgy opening schemes, managed to beat Mike Readie. He repeated the line in which he was crushed by Gavin Lock, but his opponent was less successful, and Peter managed to consolidate his extra pawn. White later blundered and promptly resigned.

Gavin Lock could only draw with Rasa Norinkeviciute, who, in her own words, “got away with murder” in their board one clash. Gavin gradually built up an overwhelming position with the Black pieces, but was unable to find a way to press home his advantage.

David Roberts is a pawn down against Andrew Fleming, following a massive time scramble in which he was lucky not to lose on time. No result has been agreed there yet.

The other unresolved game is the one between John Herbert and Phil Stimpson, where Phil has three pawns for a piece.

I scored a crushing (in the end) win over Oliver Froome, who turned up half an hour late. After a solid opening, there was some manoeuvring until Black tried to open things up with 23…c5. White struck back with 24 Nxe6, and Black soon crumbled, although the consequences of this move were not entirely clear.
