4NCL Division 3 2010-11: e2e4.org.uk 2 – UCL

Following on from the disaster in round 3, the performance of e2e4.org.uk 2 in round 4 was much stronger. Mark Josse, David Coates and I all won, while Alan Byron, Philip Horspool and John Denton all drew, giving the team a 4.5-1.5 win over UCL.

My game with Iaroslav Afonin saw my opponent choose to transpose into an innocuous line of the Queen’s Gambit Declined. Against my opponent’s minority attack, I adopted a known type of defensive formation based on …b5; I was pleased afterwards to discover that this move has been played by Efim Geller against Bent Larsen, with success, which is certainly a stamp of approval! White soon lost his way and drifted into a difficult position, where he then blundered into a decisive attack by Black on the queenside.
