4NCL Division 2 2012-13: e2e4.org.uk 2 – Oxford 1

The e2e4.org.uk second team got off to a great start in the 4NCL last Saturday, as they scored a 5.5-2.5 win over the higher rated Oxford first team. With a combination of luck and good play, they secured 4 draws on the top 4 boards, while picking up 3 wins and 1 draw on the bottom four.

Because of the weakened e2e4.org.uk squad for the first 4NCL weekend, I was up to board one, where I was facing David Zakarian, rated 2374. He surprised me by opening with the Veresov, but I managed to equalise and then gain the initiative. Later, after a few adventures, we ended up in a drawn endgame. Given the difference in our ratings, and especially because I was playing Black, this was a good result, and helped as part of the team’s excellent performance.

I give the game below with some notes.
