Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2021-22: Horsham 1 – Eastbourne 1

Last night, the Horsham first team scored a decisive win over their Eastbourne counterparts, notching up four wins in the four board match. My game against Paul Carpenter was only the third time I’ve actually played him in all the time I’ve played in the league; he’s been a regular member of the Eastbourne team for many years, but usually on a lower board.

The game started with a surprising (for me anyway!) choice of opening by Paul. The game developed in my favour, but as time trouble approached, the game lurched into complications, where both played committed innaccuracies. Close to the end, I let my winning position slip, indeed I left my opponent a chance to leave me hanging on for the draw; fortunately, my opponent did not see the correct response, then resigned a move later.

I give the game below with some notes.
