County Match (Open) 2022-23: Sussex – Kent

Sussex was playing Kent at home last Saturday. The match ended in a narrow 8.5-7.5 win, as Jaimie Wilson won the last game to finish. I was up against John Sugden with the Black pieces, and managed to draw, despite being under pressure in the second half of the game.

The game started with White adopting the Saemisch Variation against the King’s Indian Defence. Up to move 25, I played well, achieving a good position, but then I started to go wrong, attempting to attack on the kingside when that wasn’t justified, rather than completing my development. Both players started to run short of time, which resulted in mistakes from both sides of the board. In the end, my opponent was forced to go for a draw by repetition as he was down to playing on the 10 second increment.

I give the game below with some notes.
