Horsham Club Championship 2019-20: Mansson – Taylor

I started my campaign in this season’s club championship with a hard-fought win against Alex Taylor. Following a complex struggle where both sides committed inaccuracies, I finally managed to establish a winning advantage and press it home. Continue reading

Horsham Club Knockout 2019-20: Mansson – Ashby

I got off to a winning started in the club knockout, winning with White against new club member Nick Ashby. He failed to find an effective plan as Black in a typical Maroczy Bind position; then several weak moves led to defeat. Continue reading

County Match (Open) 2019-20: Sussex – Surrey

At the end of September, Sussex played Surrey in the first county match of the season. Unfortunately, Sussex lost 7-9 against the higher-rated team. I did, however, have the satisfaction of winning an interesting game. Continue reading

Horsham Club Quickplay Knockout 2019-20: Mansson – Slade

I started the Quickplay Knockout for 2019-20 with a 2-0 win against Richard Slade in round one. The first game saw me succeed with an aggressive approach for a promising position. The second game was closer, as the position was balanced before my opponent’s final move; he lost on time when making it, but it was in any case a mistaken piece sacrifice that should not have worked. I therefore move on to round three, as I have a bye in round two. Continue reading

Horsham Club Championship 2018-19: Mansson – Bennet-Stevens

My campaign in the Rook this year ended with a draw against one of our most promising junior players, Lucy Bennet-Stevens. If I had won, I would have finished equal on points with Phil Stimpson, although he would have been champion in any case, because of his superior tie break. As it happens, I finished half a point behind. From Lucy’s perspective, it was essential to secure at least a draw, to avoid relegation from the top section (the Rook). Continue reading

Horsham Club Championship 2018-19: Mansson – Higgs

Last Tuesday I played my club championship game against Anthony Higgs. I was White and my opponent choses the Czech Benoni as his defence against 1 d4. He made several provocative but possibly dubious moves, which allowed me to build up a strong position; although I missed a couple of more incisive moves, I was able to prevail in the resulting position. Continue reading

Horsham Club Quickplay Knockout 2018-19: Mansson – Rogers

As I had a bye in round two, my next tie in the Quickplay Knockout was in round three, where I took on one of our newer members, Joe Rogers. I managed to win the match comfortably 2-0, taking me into the semi-final. Continue reading

Horsham Club Knockout 2018-19: Higgs – Mansson

I managed to win the final of the knockout competition, following a tough game against Anthony Higgs. The game started with an unusual opening; both players found reasonable moves for a while, until an exchange of mistakes saw Anthony get the upper hand. However, he subsequently not only lost the advantage, but fell briefly into a lost position. It was then my turn to miss my chance. The position was then roughly equal for a long time, as both players gradually ran short of time, until Anthony finally blundered and promptly resigned, following my reply. Continue reading
