Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2019-20: Horsham 1 – Hastings 2

Horsham 1’s recent match against Hastings 2 was a frustrating draw. Both Mark Broom and I had chances to win our games, but failed to do so. Continue reading

Horsham Club Knockout 2019-20: Heath – Mansson

I scored a decent win with Black against Chris Heath in the club longplay knockout. The game started as a typical Closed Sicilian, where I was able to equalise with accurate play. Later on, my opponent went wrong as we both ran short of time, allowing me to wrap up the game quickly. Continue reading

Horsham Club Quickplay Knockout 2019-20: Mansson – Ashby

I suffered a disappointing exit from the quickplay knockout at the last club meeting of 2019. I was up against Nick Ashby, one of our new recruits. In the first game, I missed a chance to win a piece early on; then I let things slip in a balanced position, and Nick finished things fairly effectively. In the second game, I was rather fortunate to win as my opponent messed things up in a won position. As the score was 1-1, the match now went to sudden death. Unfortunately, I made a couple of serious misjudgements, castling queenside then weakening my position, which my opponent exploited well to secure victory. Continue reading

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2019-20: Horsham 1 – Worthing 2

Horsham 1 scored a hard-fought win over Worthing 2 at the start of December. My game was last to finish, when we were already 3-1 up, so the fact that I lost in the end did not matter. Continue reading

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2019-20: Horsham 1 – Brighton 1

In mid-November, Horsham 1 scored a fine 4-1 win over Brighton 1. I managed to build up a strong position in my game against Geoff James, but because I was running short of time and because of the match situation, I decided to force a draw. As it turned out, subsequent analysis confirm that I was winning. Continue reading

County Match (Open) 2019-20: Sussex – Essex

Sussex recently scored a very good win at home against Essex. I was able to contribute a draw with the Black pieces. The game opened with the Catalan Opening and I took the pawn. I had a chance to hold on to it, but did not take it. Subsequent play was interesting, but ended in a position where neither side could make progress; we therefore agreed to a draw. Continue reading

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2019-20: Horsham 1 – Haywards Heath 1

The Horsham 1 team continued its good form with a 3.5-1.5 win away to Haywards Heath 1. I drew as White against Viv Cole in an interesting game. At one point my opponent appeared to have blundered a piece, and indeed he thought it was a blunder; however, after looking at the position for a while, I correctly decided that winning the piece was too risky, and chose a quieter line. Indeed, when I agreed the draw I stood very well, but because of my time shortage, and also the match position, I accepted my opponent’s proposal. Continue reading

Horsham Club Championship 2019-20: Roberts – Mansson

My third club championship game of the season, against regular opponent Dix Roberts, ended in a draw by repetition. As Black I not only equalised, but also gained the initiative. However, I didn’t make full use of my chances and my opponent took the opportunity to force the draw. Continue reading

Horsham Club Championship 2019-20: Higgs – Mansson

I followed up my win against Alex Taylor in the club championship with a draw as Black against Anthony Higgs. An unorthodox opening saw us reach an endgame that was favourable for Black; however, I misplayed the position and gave my opponent some chances. Fortunately, these didn’t in the end amount to much, and we agreed a draw with both players running short of time. Continue reading

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2019-20: Horsham 1 – Horsham 2

Horsham 1 defeated Horsham 2 3.5-1.5 in the traditional Mid-Sussex League opener. I was up against Matt Forster as Black on board two. I managed to gain the better position out of the opening, and after some adventures in a complicated game, achieved a win. Continue reading
