Last Tuesday, I was up against Peter Harbott in the semi-final of the club knockout. Unfortunately, although I achieved a winning position out of the opening, I was unable to convert my advantage and allowed a draw. The match therefore goes to a second game with colours reversed, probably on the third Tuesday of June.
I had the White pieces and the game started with a Petroff Defence. I achieved a winning position after a serious mistake by my opponent, but I failed to maintain it dues to some inaccuracies in my analysis. The game then went into an opposite-coloured bishop endgame where I had an extra pawn, but my opponent could establish a blockade. However, after my opponent arranged his pieces poorly, I gained some winning chances again; once more I failed to take these as I unwisely pushed my h-pawn too far and I was subsequently unable to break through.
I give the game below with some notes.
