I was up against Mark Broom in the fourth round of the club championship last Tuesday. The game ended in a draw after some adventures, leaving us both on 3.5/4.
I had the Black pieces. Following inaccuracies on both sides, the opening resolved into a balanced middle game. However, following an unwise change in the pawn structure, I fell into a passive position. Then, when White tried to open up the kingside, I unwisely complied, leading to a difficult situation. Fortunately, although my opponent found the basic idea of sacrificing a pawn to break through in the centre, he did not find the correct follow up; this allowed me, with some accurate defence, to hold the draw.
I give the game below with some notes.
