Last week, I played Ian Edgson in the last round of the club championship swiss tournament. I managed to win an interesting game through an attack on his king.
I was White and the game started with a closed line of the French Tarrasch. My opponent played a little passively, but I reacted badly and after he found a neat tactical blow, he had the better of it. However, he soon slipped up, allowing me to win an exchange for a pawn. While I could have looked to swap down to an endgame, it seemed unclear whether I would have much advantage there, so I decided to go for an attack instead. I sacrificed a piece for some pawns, leaving me with a rook and pawns against two minor pieces; in addition, I had a strong attack. Although I did not pursue this with complete accuracy, I always had the better of it; as we both ran short of time, my opponent cracked and I was able to achieve a decisive win of material.
I give the game below with some notes.
