Horsham Chess Club Championship 2024-25: Broom – Mansson

Last night, I was up against Mark Broom in the ninth round of the Horsham Club Championship Swiss; in round eight I had received a full point bye. I needed to win to have a chance of catching my opponent, as he was in the lead a point ahead of me.

Mark had the White pieces and opened with 1 Nf3. I responded with the flexible 1…d6 and soon obtained a promising position, due to his misplaced knight on c3. He soon made a serious error, but while my response was good, I did not choose the absolute best continuation, which would have left me a pawn up, as well as having an excellent position. I then continued to press, but managed to let my advantage slip with some inferior moves as I started to run short of time. Finally, I decided to bail out to a drawn endgame with less than a minute left on my clock.

I give the game below with some notes.
