Horsham Club Championship 2010-11: Mansson – Roberts

On Tuesday I played my first club championship game of the year against Dix Roberts. The result of the game was extremely frustrating. In the opening, my opponent made a known error, which allows White to win the exchange for a pawn, while retaining a comfortable position. By the time we reached the first time control, my position was clearly winning. However, I then made the mistake of trying to finish the game on the night, rather than opting for an adjournment; if I had done that, I wouldn’t have been surprised if Dix had resigned without resuming. In the play that followed, I made a series of mistakes, while Dix played some good moves to generate counter play. In the end, I made one miscalculation too many and lost the game. Continue reading

Some thoughts on the moves 1 c4 and 1 Nf3 for White

The moves 1 c4 and 1 Nf3 have often been misrepresented in opening books. The assumption seems to be that when White plays 1 c4 or 1 Nf3, he is intending to adopt one of the formations characteristic of the English Opening, Reti, or King’s Indian Attack. However, this ignores one of the key ways these moves have been used over the years, in particular by top players. Continue reading
