Horsham Club Championship 2011-12: Harbott – Mansson

On Tuesdays, I was up against Peter Harbott in the rook. Although I was playing Black, I soon achieved a comfortable position. My opponent then made a tactical oversight that he was fortunate did not lose material, but did lead to his position being compromised. In the end, I succeeded in forcing mate as he fell deep into time trouble. Continue reading

Horsham Club Knockout 2011-12: Higgs – Mansson

I managed to negotiate the second round of the club knockout on Tuesday night, following a wild game against Anthony Higgs. He decided to punt the rare 4 h4 against my Gruenfeld Defence. However, he failed to find a convincing response to my aggressive response 4…c5, and soon found himself in a dubious position. The game subsequently had a number of ups and downs for both players, and certainly seemed to entertain the spectators, but in the end I managed to prevail. Continue reading

Horsham Club Championship 2011-12: Kington – Mansson Finished

I completed my adjourned club championship game against Paul Kington last night. The game ended as a draw, after my opponent played a defence I had (inexcusably) failed to look at in my adjournment analysis, and I failed to find the best line of play over the board. Continue reading

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2011-12: Horsham 1 – Horsham 2

Last night saw the Horsham first team’s opening fixture in this Mid-Sussex League season. Because the club has two teams in division one, they have to play each other first, so this match was between Horsham 1 and Horsham 2. In the end, the firsts squeaked a narrow victory. Continue reading

Horsham Club Championship 2011-12: Mansson – Warren

Last night I won my rook game against Nick Warren. I obtained an advantage out of the opening, but failed to push it home, allowing my opponent to reach a level endgame. However, he then allowed me to build up a grip on the position, and finally cracked by swapping off into a lost king and pawn endgame. Continue reading

Horsham Club Championship 2011-12: Kington – Mansson Adjourned

Last night my club championship game against Paul Kington was not finished. We adjourned the game after 42 moves in a position that is in my favour, although whether I can win is another matter. The game is due to be resumed in three weeks.

Horsham Club Quickplay Knockout 2011-12: Mansson – Britton

As mentioned in my previous post, last night featured the first two rounds of the Quickplay Knockout. There I wrote about my first round match with Julie Denning. Here I turn my attention to round two, where my match was against David Britton. Again I won 2-0, although there was a moment in the second game where I blundered, allowing my opponent the chance to win. Fortunately, he missed it! Continue reading
