Horsham Club Championship 2012-13: Mansson – Roberts

Last night I was up against Dix Roberts in the club championship. The game saw me gradually building up a strong position against Dix’s Modern Benoni. Dix slipped up under the pressure, leaving me with a winning position. However, I soon after blundered myself, turning the game on its head. Fortunately, Dix soon returned the favour, and the game fizzled out into a draw. Continue reading

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2012-13: Horsham 1 – Brighton 1

On Tuesday I played for Horsham 1 against Brighton 1 in the Mid-Sussex League. The team suffered a clear loss, and my individual game was frustrating, as I managed to lose on time in what looks like a level position. Continue reading

Horsham Club Championship 2012-13: Mansson – Harris

My third Club Championship game of the season was on Tuesday night against Mick Harris. The game started with Mick choosing the offbeat Budapest Gambit as Black. I managed to secure a small edge out of the opening, which increased as Mick failed to pursue counter-play vigorously enough with Black. Some further errors in a difficult position allowed me to press home an attack against his king on the queen-side. Continue reading

County Match (Open) 2012-13: Sussex – Middlesex

After the high of their excellent win against Surrey, the Sussex Open Team came crashing down to earth with a heavy defeat to a powerful Middlesex side, who had an average grade of just over 201. However, in my individual game I managed to score an excellent result, drawing with IM Colin Crouch as Black in a complicated game. Both sides had their chances at various point, but in the end Black decided to bail out with a draw. Continue reading

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2012-13: Horsham 1 – Lewes 1

Horsham 1 suffered a comprehensive defeat in its match away against Lewes 1 last night. A full report can be found here. My game against Lim Zhuo Ren was disappointing. Although I was pessimistic about my position during the game, in fact until I played 21 f3, I was doing reasonably well. Also, I managed to lose on time with 9 minutes to go before the time control, with my opponent clearly better but not absolutely guaranteed to win. Continue reading

4NCL Division 2 2012-13: e2e4.org.uk 2 – Rhyfelwyr Essylwg 1

The e2e4.org.uk second team came down to earth with an almighty bump in the second round of the 4NCL. They lost their match against Rhyfelwyr Essylwg 1 by the same margin they beat Oxford 1 in the first round (5.5-2.5). Philip Bonafont and Richard Truman managed to win, while David Coates scored a creditable draw, but the rest of the team lost their games. Continue reading
