Horsham Chess Club Championship 2022-23: Higgs – Mansson

I finished my games in this season’s club championship with another draw. I was up against Anthony Higgs with the black pieces. He played a gambit, against which I did not defend in the best way, but he failed to find a way to exploit his extra pawn, so the game ended in a draw.

Last night, Horsham progressed to the final of the McArthur Cup, with a hard-fought 3.5-2.5 win at home against Chichester. Horsham Chess Club Knockout 2022-23: Broom – Mansson

I was up against Mark Broom in the semi-final of the knockout competition last knight. The game began with a symmetrical version of the English which led to a complicated middlegame. Neither play obtained an advantage, and play went into an endgame. Both players turned down draws, and the game was ultimately decided in Mark’s favour after mistakes by both players in the rook and pawn endgame.
