Horsham Club Championship 2023-24: Martin – Mansson

Last night I played in the first round of Horsham Chess Club’s new format club championship. Rather than have separate sections as before, the championship is now a single Swiss tournament, with nine rounds spread over nine months; the overall champions wins the “Rook” trophy, while those who fall below the prescribed grading limits are eligible for the “Bishop” and “Knight”.

Horsham Club Knockout 2023-24: Mansson – Parker

Last night, I played my first round game in the club knockout against Alex Parker. I has the white pieces, and managed to win a quick game to progress to the next round.

My opponent went wrong early, first conceding the center, then blundering a pawn. Although he could subsequently have defended more robustly, the result was then never in doubt.

Horsham Club Rapidplay 2023-24: Savill – Mansson

Following on from the previous post, here is my second game against Jordy Savill.

The game saw my opponent play an enterprising version of the London System. He did not find the best way to continue on moves 11 and 12, which turned the game in my favour. Following some mutual errors in the complications, I was able to guide play into a winning endgame, which I converted with both players very short of time.

The first game saw me build up a a strong attacking position against my opponent’s passive opening. There were a couple of subsequent errors by each side, before I was able to bring the attack home, then simplify things to a winning king and pawn endgame.

Horsham Chess Club Championship 2022-23: Higgs – Mansson

I finished my games in this season’s club championship with another draw. I was up against Anthony Higgs with the black pieces. He played a gambit, against which I did not defend in the best way, but he failed to find a way to exploit his extra pawn, so the game ended in a draw.
