Horsham Club Knockout 2014-15: Mansson – Moorhouse

Last Tuesday saw me play my latest game in the Horsham club knockout. Although it was my second game this year in the competition, technically it was the third round, as I, along with most of the entrants, had a bye in round two. Continue reading

County Match (U180) 2014-15: Sussex – Essex

In contrast to the Open team a fortnight earlier, the U180 team suffered a crushing defeat against Essex by 11.5 points to 4.5. We defaulted the bottom two boards and could only manage a couple of wins (well done the two Pauls, Selby and Taylor). I at least drew my game, unlike the previous match where I lost.

My game was a rather quiet affair. I played a line involving an early exchange of queens against the Queen’s Gambit Accepted. Although I was able to generate some small pressure, in the end this did not amount to much, and so the game ended in a draw.

I give the game below with some notes.

Horsham Club Championship 2014-15: Mansson – Comley

I played my club championship game against Ian Comley last Tuesday. I managed to notch up another win and so I am on 2 out of 2 in the competition.

County Match (Open) 2014-15: Sussex – Essex

In all my years playing for Sussex against Essex, we have always struggled to achieve much against them, particularly when playing away at Wanstead. It was therefore an excellent result for the Sussex team last Saturday when we defeated Essex 9-7 at their customary Wanstead venue. It was especially good as we were 1-0 down at the start as we had to default a board, but after Brian Denman scored a good win on board one and there was a flurry of draws lower down, we then managed to win a number of games to secure the win with a match to spare. Horsham Club Championship 2014-15: Harbott – Mansson

I made a start to my club championship games for this season yesterday. I was Black against Peter Harbott, whom I have played many times over the years. The game turned out to be another tricky encounter. Continue reading

Horsham Club Knockout 2014-15: Mansson – Howard

Last night saw the first round of the standard play knockout competition at Horsham Chess Club. I was paired against Brian Howard. The game turned out to be a straightforward win for me, as my opponent grabbed a hot pawn early on, but was unable to defend against my threats. Continue reading

Horsham Club Quickplay Knockout 2014-15: Mansson – Nkomo

Last Tuesday saw the opening two rounds of the Horsham Chess Club Quickplay Knockout. As reported in my previous post, I beat Gary Whitmore 2-0 in round one, but my second round encounter against Melusi Nkomo was a tougher match. Continue reading

Horsham Club Quickplay Knockout 2014-15: Mansson – Whitmore

Last Tuesday was the designated club night for rounds 1 and 2 of the quickplay knockout. I was paired against Gary Whitmore in round 1, and managed to win both our 15 minute games with relative ease. The first saw me build up a kingside attack as Black after some passive play from my opponent, while the second saw him blunder a piece and not recover. Continue reading

Champion’s Simul 2014

Anthony Higgs was club champion last season, so he has the “pleasure” of taking on all comers at this season’s Champion’s Simul. The decision had been taken to restrict participation to a maximum of 20 opponents in order to ensure a timely finish, although as it happened, there were only 19. Anthony acquitted himself well, winning 12-7, and we were able to clear up in time to make the traditional post match trip to the Malt Shovel.

County Match (Minor Counties) 2013-14: Sussex – Leicestershire

Sussex qualified for the Minor Counties section of the ECF National Stages this year, a competition for teams with an average grade of under 180. Dix struggled to get together a team, and indeed we ended up defaulting a board, which in the end proved decisive. Continue reading
