Sussex League (Division 1) 2025-26: Horsham 1 – Hayward Heath 1

Horsham 1 suffered a minor setback when they were held to a draw at home by Haywards Heath 1. Unfortunately, my game was the one to end in defeat, and we were dependent on Anthony Higgs managing to win on bottom board to save the match.

I was White on board three and up against Jeff Boardman, a familiar figure on the Sussex chess scene, but not someone I had played previously. I gained a superior position early on but was unable to make anything of it. Then a natural kingside thrust unexpectedly backfired, leaving me in a difficult position. A series of bad moves when running short of time then led to my defeat.

I give the game below with some notes.
