Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2015-16: Horsham 1 – Worthing 1

Worthing have proved difficult opposition for us in recent years, but in our latest match, we scored a crushing 4.5-0.5 win. After a couple of losses in the league, I was happy to notch my first win, especially as it was against Chris Jones, whom I have not managed to beat in our previous meetings.

White reached a variation of the “big clamp” formation against the Sicilian via an unusual move order. I decided to break open the centre, which worked well and gave me a position that felt better for me. However, it wasn’t until my opponent unwisely decided to give up the bishop pair that my position started to look noticeably better. Following a couple of further mistakes, White’s position rapidly went to downhill, and he resigned just before the time control as I won a third pawn.

I give the game below with some notes.
