County Match (Open) 2016-17: Sussex – Essex

On Saturday I played in the county match between Sussex and Kent at the familar Kent venue in Wanstead.  Unfortunately, because of a clash with the 4NCL, the Sussex Open team was short of four players and so 4-0 down before the match started. The players present acquitted themselves well, but were unable to overcome the deficit, losing 7-9.

I was Black against Jeff Goldberg, who has proved a difficult opponent in the past. I played a couple of inaccurate moves in the opening and ended up in a difficult position. Fortunately, my opponent took a lot of time in building up his position, and finding himself with minutes left to make for 14 moves, accepted my draw offer.

I give the game below with some notes.
